Gustave Doré's illustrations for Dante's Inferno are considered to be one of the most enchanting creations in our civilization. Although he struggled to find a publisher for his lavish folio edition, Doré self-published it in 1861. His artwork was an instant success and has appeared in over two hundred editions of Dante since then. Doré's illustrations have inspired many artists throughout the years, including William Blake and Salvador Dalí. This article highlights the timeless marriage of great literature and great art, as seen in Doré's work.
