Peter Schmeichel claims he "doesn't understand" Erik ten Hag 's approach to Scott McTominay after his game-winning brace.

The midfielder clambered off the substitutes' bench to secure Manchester United a 2-1 victory over Brentford. It represented a remarkable turn of events for the academy graduate.

He previously looked like he was on the way out of Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag was open to moving him on amid interest from Premier League rivals West Ham, as well as Bayern Munich. Speaking after McTominay's stunning cameo, Ten Hag admitted that he was keen to keep McTominay but did not dispute that the Red Devils would have been open to cashing in.

He said: "Every player has a price but he has a big value, sporting and also economic. I want to have a player like Scott McTominay in the squad. He is Manchester United in every faith. Every minute he will fight for the match. He is Manchester United in everything in his heart. When you are coming on and giving this to the team it tells a lot."

Ten Hag's comments have left some baffled, particularly Red Devils icon Schmeichel. The Dane was left confused by the United boss' willingness to sell McTominay.

Responding to the midfielder's impact, he said: "He's got the ability to do that. I don't understand what coaches are doing.

Scott McTominay was up for sale all summer and I don't understand that.
